Heather, spooky season is upon us, and educators, librarians, and parents have a range of Halloween read-alouds to choose from. That choice can be difficult, especially when reading to a wide range of ages or personalities. While some children love stories that lean into the dark or creepy parts of the holiday, there are just as many kids who are excited to dress up, but do not want to be scared.

Beaming Books publishes Halloween-friendly stories for those kids. For children who are younger or are not fans of stories that feel scary, these funny and gentle picture books will help them feel festive without fear.

Halloween In the Orchard

By Phyllis Alsdurf, illustrated by Lisa Hunt

The apples are ready for harvest and Halloween is here! What better way to celebrate than by donning homemade costumes and going to the local apple orchard? In this story, a boy and his family enjoy everything the orchard has to offer, including searching for scarecrows, getting lost in a corn maze, and going on a hayride. Backmatter includes a search-and-find key for finding scarecrows in the book and instructions for decorating a homemade trick-or-treat bag. From the author of Thanksgiving in the Woods and A Simple Christmas on the Farm comes a charming fall holiday story.

Gilbert and the Ghost

By Heather Pierce Stigall, illustrated by Jess Mason

Gilbert often feels invisible, just like the ghost living at 632 Savannah Street. Despite his family's disbelief, Gilbert leaves gifts for the ghost: a friendship bracelet, a plate of cookies, even a drawing with a note. For kids who might often feel unseen, Gilbert and the Ghost is a tale of overcoming obstacles and finding friendship in mysterious places.
